The recoat window is a budget decision
Water boards replace tanks they could have recoated because nobody flagged the coating at the right stage. Chalking and streaking cost thousands to fix; pinholes and section loss cost hundreds of thousands to replace. Standards are the spec, not a slogan
Water tank coating work runs on written standards: AWWA D102 for coating systems, NSF/ANSI 61 listings for anything touching drinking water, and AMPP surface prep grades under it all. When should a water tank be recoated instead of replaced?
While the steel is still sound, which is earlier than most systems act. Exterior chalking and rust streaks are the affordable stage; blistering, interior pinholes, and section loss are the expensive one. A tank caught at the streak stage recoats for a fraction of replacement cost, and an inspection photo set every couple of years is what catches it.
What coating goes inside a potable water tank?
Only NSF/ANSI 61 listed lining systems, applied over an SP 10 near-white blast per the manufacturer’s data sheet, with the cure and ventilation the listing requires before the tank returns to service. How do you keep blast debris out of the neighborhood?
Full containment sized to the setting: ground protection, shrouded or enclosed work areas where the site calls for it, recovered and bagged media, and disposal in a documented waste stream. Water tanks stand next to schools and houses, and containment is priced as its own line, planned before the compressor starts.
Can a small rural system afford this work?
Usually yes, when it is caught early and scheduled smart.
