How to choose a tank sandblasting contractor in Shreveport
Choose a tank sandblasting contractor by checking three things before you compare price: a Louisiana contractor license and insurance certificates you can verify, a written quote that names the blast standard (SP 6 or SP 10), and a real plan for containment and lead paint. A contractor who publishes rates and documents profile readings has already removed most of your risk.
What should I look for before hiring a tank blasting crew?
Look for paperwork, standards, and a containment plan, in that order, and only then talk money. Around Shreveport most of the outfits bidding tank work are general pressure washing or painting crews, and the gap between them and a tank specialist shows up in exactly these seven checks:
- Verify the license, don’t just ask about it. The Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors runs a free public lookup. Commercial work at $50,000 and up requires a state license, which covers most water tank programs and larger battery contracts. A single 500-barrel tank often prices under that line, so no license is not automatically disqualifying, but a contractor who dodges the question is.
- Get insurance certificates before anyone mobilizes.General liability and workers’ comp at minimum. If the tank sits on a producing pad, your operator’s master service agreement probably sets higher minimums, and a crew that has worked leases before will know its own numbers without checking.
- Demand the blast standard in writing. Exteriors under a two-coat system get SP 6 commercial blast. Interior linings need SP 10 near-white, which takes more abrasive and more time. A quote that names neither is a quote for whatever the crew feels like doing that day.
- Ask the lead paint question early. Tanks coated before the 1980s, which describes much of the steel still standing in the Caddo-Pine Island field, often carry lead-based systems. The right answer is test first, contain fully, dispose of recovered media as documented waste. Open blasting lead paint onto a lease is illegal, and the liability lands on the property owner.
- For interior work, ask about the confined space program. A tank interior is a permit-required confined space under OSHA’s confined space rules: atmosphere monitoring, ventilation, an attendant at the manway, and a rescue plan. A contractor who has never heard of an entry permit should never enter your tank.
- Ask when the primer goes on. The only acceptable answer in this climate is the same day as the blast, or a holding primer if your own painter follows. Humidity here flash rusts bare steel in hours, and prep money spent ahead of a slow painter is prep money wasted.
- Get mobilization as its own line. Rig, compressor, media, and containment all travel to your site. That trip has a price, and you should see it before the truck rolls, the way our rate sheet states it for the metro and the parish ring.

Ask the six questions below. The middle column is what a qualified tank contractor says without hesitating, and the right column is the answer that should end the call.

Two of them do. When a tank blasting contractor is the wrong call
Some jobs should not come to us or anyone like us, and knowing that saves you a wasted phone call. Car frames, hobby parts, and anything that fits in a truck bed belong at a blast cabinet shop, where stationary equipment does finer work for less. A tank with wall thinning, weeping seams, or failed welds needs an API 653 inspector and a welder before any abrasive touches it, because blasting money spent on steel that then gets cut out is money burned.
